Lucy is an abstract painter, whose dreamlike works draw on people’s relationship with the natural environment around them.

Working spontaneously and intuitively, Lucy is interested in the relationship between accidental or organic mark-making, and deliberate techniques, and these contrasting processes are visible throughout her work. Paint appears to move on its own, generating splashes, spills, and stains. Lucy works largely with acrylic and oil, using a natural colour palette with hints of metallic, which represents the pockets of magic one can find when one takes the time to slow down and notice the small things.

Lucy grew up on the Tutukaka coast in Northland, and moved to Auckland to attended Elam School of Fine Arts, graduating with a BFA (Honours) in 2013. Her parents’ work as English teachers, and a childhood spent wandering estuaries, bush and farmland, have worked their way into her painting as a fusion of environmental and linguistic concepts. Her dramatic pieces draw upon the Shakespearean notion that nature and human emotion are interconnected and reflected in one another and explore how we seek out environments befitting how we feel.

Throughout Lucy’s work we see traces of figures stumbling through natural landscapes, like flotsam caught in a turbulent tide. Colour and scale are used to represent Lucy’s own emotion in her work and connect the viewer to theirs. Her work explores transformational change, which challenges our perceptions and provides a new lens on the world. The details in Lucy's work invite the viewer to recall their own memories and the elements within themselves that are constantly in flux.

Understanding darkness; this feeling is intense, like confrontation. Red. Passion. Energy. The organic shapes bleed into one another and become confused. There is a sense of weeping, in much the same way as a waterfall cries onto rock. Each droplet is inspected and measured.
